Adding a periodic transaction is now available !

Some of you have waited for this improvement, but it was worth it ! Now, Gobseck handles periodic transactions.

Here is a list of the new functionalities :

1) You can choose to set a periodic transaction (incoming, outcoming, transfer or balance adjustement) either:
- every day, or one day in x
- every week, or one week in x, choosing of course which day(s) of the week
- every month, or one month in x, choosing of course which day(s) of the week
- and neverending or ending at a certain date

2) You can also set a reminder to receive a memo in your mail box (to remind to you actually do the transaction at your bank for example)
3) You can now visualize the transactions to come, including the next periodic transaction if you sort your transactions by date.

4) You can edit a transaction, a transfer or a balance adjustment and turn it into a periodic event.

5) When deleting a occurrence of a periodic transaction, you choose either to delete just this one occurrence or all upoming events.

Now a calculator !

You can now use exclusively your mouse to create the details of a new transaction : the last field that required to manually type text was the 'Amount' field. Now, right on its left was added a calculator icon !

A brand new forum in English and French

Now the beta-testers can enjoy a forum specifically created for them (and for the future Gobseck users).

The forum (which you can reach via gobseck.com or available at this address) enables you to share your Gobseck experience with the other lucky guys who use it, to suggest new functionalities, and possibly to ask for some help on doing any action you can't figure out how to do on Gobseck (expecting the user manual when the public beta will be launched).

New invitations now available

Thanks to our collaboration with new beta-testers we have been able to solve some problems and most of all to really optimize the portal.
Even if there still remains many functionalities to be implemented, Gobseck is now perfectly usable, secure and stable (at least with Firefow, Safari and IE7.)

That is why we decided to add 10 invititations for the beta-testers to distribute, so that they can enable their circle to enjoy Gobseck if they wish to.

10_invitations
Moreover, this is addressed to the bloggers who were kind enough to register and try out Gobseck: if you have readers interested in 2.0 web who might be interested in an online and free portal to manage their finances, and you wish to distribute some more invitations, feel free to contact us at and tell us how many invitations you would need.

Please keep addressing us your remarks (positive or negative) and suggestions.

Several corrections and improvements:

When you edit a transaction, the auto-completion works now. You can click on the icon corresponding to the field to see the list of all the propositions, or you can type the beginning of a word to complete the field automatically.

autocompletion_edition

In the same way, the auto-completion also works when you break down a transaction.

autocompletion_ventilation

Moreover, I have made possible compression and data sent back by the AJAX request concerning the auto-completion are now stored in cache. So now you don't have 5Ko requests, but rather requests < to 1Ko, that are stored in cache by your browser so that it becomes even faster.

Finally, when you fly with your mouse over a particular tag in the tag cloud, it highlights the transactions containing this tag in the transactions panel.

surligne_tags

Accounts setting

You can now modify your accounts, add some new ones or delete existing ones.

edit_operation

You'll notice you can change the currency for your accounts, and that Gobseck will ask you whether you want to convert all the existing transactions of your account using the current rate of exchange ! But don't use this function for the same account too often for the moment because you might have some rounding up mistakes if you convert you transaction two times in a row (199,99$ instead of 200$).

Introducing the Gobseck team

Arnaud ZELER Arnaud ZELER (Nonotte)
I am a med student – I know this is uncommon – and my life is divided between my internship at the hospital in the morning (remember Carter in Emergency, season one), my courses in the afternoon and the evening training conferences to prepare the examination to become a resident – but let’s leave these details aside.

What I am really keen on, besides my studies, is making websites. I’ve been doing this for 5 years. I am a perfect self-taught guy. I started doing some icky html, just like every beginner, then some php, icky as well, and then as time went on, I found a passion for php, and I am quite proud to say that I get along well with this language. ;-).

These last years, I made a website in 2002 for the med students association in Nancy(not online anymore but it looked like that), the website for the union of the IMG in Lorraine, and more recently some other I am rather proud of: one for the association of the non-residents med students of Nancy (Association des Externes de Nancy (http://www.ecn.asso.fr) and one for the Tutorat de Toulouse (http://www.tutoweb.org). There are many other, but enough with the CV already.

Stéphanie BAPST Stéphanie BAPST (Boubinette)
I live with this Junior student, who studies English at the university.
As every woman deserving this title, she dedicates a good deal of her time to managing her money.
The problem is that as I made her switch from Windows to Macintosh a year ago, and Microsoft Money does not exist on Mac, until now no accounting software has convinced her.
That is why in April 2006, following her advice and since so many new possibilities were then accessible with the new AJAX technology, I started to think about a data base enabling us to manage our money on our personal accounts and to share the administration of our joint account.

Although she does not code, she masters foreign languages and MacOSX tools.
So she is the team translator, and she will also take care of the after sales service, the user guide including screencast etc, but most of all she is my most faithful beta-tester, since she’s been using Gobseck to keep an eye on all of her accounts since the very beginning – and when something does not work, I sure know about it ;-)

Matthieu RENARD Matthieu RENARD (Goupil)
In 2004 when he was still an ESSTIN student (engineer school), our ways crossed thanks to associative activities. We ended up very good friends, and he is the one who enabled me to master TCP/IP, WEP, Host, and all these unknown things an average med student does not know about.
Goupil finished off his engineer studies two years ago, and works now in a company in Paris (I don’t exactly understand what he does – too complicated for me), but anyway he knows his way about data bases, Oracle in particular (but MYSQL has no secrets for him of course), about Java and every coding language a computer engineer worthy of the title is supposed to know. He just has a slight problem with speling, but that’s no big deal.

In the first place Goupil joined our team as a consultant for server managing, and for complex requests to the data base, but when I published the 1st version of Gobseck online, I think he was smitten and now he is in charge of the development of the widgets in the Situation tab … and he has a bunch of ideas !

Just like us, he now manages his money with Gobseck, (I think he has imported his bank transactions of the last 3 years – way to go !)

Gobseck
The story of Gobseck
In April 2006 I first made a local application on the base of an old website in order to have a glimpse of what it could be like, the I showed it to some friends who told me they’d be interested too, but it is only in November 2006 that we really started developing the current version, the aim of which was to be published online and made available to every one who just like us needed an application to manage their finances (with everything it implied (security, encrypting etc)).

We develop Gobseck for pleasure in our spare time. We are trying to make this application look as professional as possible (and we are getting close), free for everyone, but our main motivation for the moment is the fact that we use it ourselves: I had never made my accounts before, and I can’t live without it anymore !

Gobseck is multilingual

That's it ! Gobseck is multilingual (or at least bilingual). It is entirely translated in English and is ready to be presented to the big world out there !

We hope our German and Spanish neighbors are also going to be able to enjoy Gobseck in their language pretty soon.
